Your willpower has a schedule. So does their push calendar.
The "someone liked you 🥺" push doesn’t have to arrive when someone likes you. It can wait for when you’re likeliest to open the app — and an app that lives on opens has every reason to prefer the second.
You don’t need inside information to guess when it comes. Late evening — decision fatigue maxed, the couch has you, tomorrow feels theoretical — is when most people are easiest. Any app learns when you tend to open it. Point that at a clock and 9:47pm stops looking like a coincidence.
What to expect
- Pings that cluster around when you usually open — apps optimize for the times that work.
- A "we miss you" cadence if you go quiet — that’s win-back, and Match says it does it.
- Likes shown blurred, with the face behind the paywall — the notification is an invoice wearing a heart.
The counterpunch
Turn their notifications off — not all notifications, theirs: Settings, Notifications, each dating app, off. Two minutes, and their best weapon (the unprompted urge, hand-delivered) is gone.
An urge that has to start by itself is far weaker than one delivered to your lock screen.
This app pings you around then too, by the way. Once, to say the opposite thing. That’s the whole arms race.
